From Your TJLA President

Dear TJLA Family,
Summer is here and off to a great start. I would like to congratulate everyone on how well the Field Day went. I had a blast and hope everyone else did as well. This year we played relay games with candy and water. Brad Davis cooled us down with a watergun but ended up wet and in need of a new cell phone. Some juniors won great prizes at Bingo. The Texas A&M University Meat Lab was a interesting learning experience. I am looking forward to seeing those of you who are going to nationals this year in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It’s going to be a long drive, but it will be well worth it. If you can’t go this year I would like to encourage you to start planning to go in 2009, which Texas will be hosting in Amarillo, Texas. We need to be represented well and show that “every thing really is bigger in Texas.”
If you have never experienced nationals I would definitely recommend it because you get to support the Limousin breed, spend a week with friends you know, and meet new ones from across the country who have the same interests (Limousin cattle).
For those of you who don’t know me I am Katelyn Smith of Stephenville, Texas, and am also the newly elected TJLA President. I am going to be a Junior at Stephenville High School and am very involved in their FFA program as well as 4-H.
Here’s one of my favorite scriptures that helps me to remember that no matter what the age or if someone is a discouragement you CAN make a difference. “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” I Timothy 4:12

See ya’ll soon,
Katelyn Smith

TJLA Field Day….Education, Fun, Fellowship and Competition

Texas juniors and their families converged on Bryan, Texas June 6, 7 and 8 for the annual Texas Limousin Field Day and Junior Heifer Show. On Friday night, the fun began with various relay games, most noticeably the “Life Saver Relay” contest. Contestants lined up in two lines and attempted to pass a Lifesaver candy from one to the other with out the use of hands via a toothpick held in their mouth. The night concluded with a bingo game where various prizes were passed out to winners by a “special” prize patrol. The grand prize winners in the bingo contests received a $500 coupon towards the purchase of a Limousin heifer at any TLA-sanctioned sale.
On Saturday the group was taken to the E.M. Rosenthal Meat Science & Technology Center on the campus of Texas A & M University for a very informative presentation on beef production. Sunday began with breakfast and a church service, followed by the heifer show and concluding with the showmanship competition.

Lee Roy Lawrence, Anton, TX was named the senior showman of the 2008 TJLA Field Day.

Kyle Ming of Liberty, TX was named the top Pee Wee Showman.

Kody Banda of Kyle, TX was named the winner in the junior showmanship division.

Tanner Schmidt of Grandview, TX was named the winner of the intermediate showmanship division.

Junior National, AALF Coming To Texas in ‘09

Dear TLA and TJLA Membership,

As you know, Texas will be hosting the 2009 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress and All American Limousin Futurity July 11-18, 2009 in Amarillo. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with hosting this event in 1983 (San Antonio)  1992 (Fort Worth), and 2002 (Amarillo). It is very rewarding and fun to have our National Limousin family come to our “home” for the premier week of the year for our breed. I must also be honest, it takes a lot of planning and hard work.

If you are interested in serving on a committee, please plan to attend the Texas Limousin Association annual meeting in Fort Worth. We will be assigning committees and mapping our route to Amarillo in ‘09. If you are unable to attend but want to be a part of the action, please contact Bruce Lawrence at (806) 997-5381 or me at (806) 375-2345.

I look forward to the fellowship of working with fellow TLA and TJLA members and the crew in Amarillo to ensure the success of this great event. I hope you are as excited and fired up about it as I am. Thanks in advance, and let’s have a great year in 2008 in the Limousin breed.

Bret Begert
