TLA Banquet and Benefit Auction a Success
The Texas Limousin Association held its annual awards
banquet and benefit auction Saturday evening, January 29
at the Radisson Fossil Creek Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas
. The event was well attended by members and guests.
The evening began with a social hour and ribeye steak
dinner. At the conclusion of the meal retiring members
of the board of directors were recognized for their
service to the association.
Each year the TLA recognizes an outstanding member of
the junior association. This is a difficult task as we
have so many outstanding junior members. This year’s
nominees came down to two and rather than flip a coin,
we presented awards to Travis Payne and Heather Kosub.
Travis currently serves as vice president of the Texas
Junior Limousin Association. He is a senior at
Whitharral High School where he is captain of the
football and basketball teams, president of the National
Honor Society, Student Council and FFA. His many
accomplishments in the showring include Supreme Champion
heifer, senior heifer showmanship and senior steer
showmanship at the
2011 Hockley County Stock Show.
Heather is a senior at East Central High school where
she ranks in the top three percent of her class, she was
recently named FFA Scholar of the Week and the
Superintendent’s Student of the Month. She has been
accepted to Texas A&M University. Heather has been a
member of the Texas Junior Limousin association for
eight years, and has served on the TJLA board for four
years.
Newcomer of the Year was a little easier. Rusty and
Tammy McCarthy’s Omega 8 burst on the scene two years
ago at the Cowtown Classic Limousin Sale in Fort Worth,
making several top purchases. This year they returned as
a consignor with a high selling heifer which went on to
be named Reserve Grand Champion of the Fort Worth open
show the next day. The Lifetime Achievement Award is
presented to someone who has demonstrated commitment and
longevity to the breed and the association. Liz Puthoff
of Clear Creek Farms is such a person. For over thirty
years, Liz has been raising and registering Limousin
cattle. Some of the top names in fullblood genetics are
still producing on her beautiful Forestburg, Texas
ranch.
The evening concluded with a benefit auction which
raised over $10,000 to support TLA activities. Thank you
to Sonny Booth, Mark Smith and Ken Holloway for
assisting, and the following who made purchases and
donations: Larry & Teresa Garrison, Joe & Margaret Hoot,
Wayne & Linda Baber, Cecil Osborn, Magness Land &
Cattle, Lawrence Family, Glen Schur family, Jay & Molly
Wilder, Counsil Family, Ralph & Belinda Hawkins,
Burnsides Catch Penny, Roshburbers Pick a Bull, Tim

TLA Holds 40th Annual membership Meeting
The
40th annual membership meeting of the Texas Limousin
Association was held January 29, 2011 at the Radisson
Fossil Creek Hotel in Ft Worth, TX. A large number of
members were on hand to discuss the affairs of the
association. TLA Executive Secretary Ralph Hawkins
presented the financial report which reflected a loss of
$1,260.92 for the year 2010. The loss was mainly
attributed to weaker than expected consignment sales.
On a positive note The TLA’s investments posted an
increase of $2,133.41 while the Texas Juniors
investments posted a $1,908.52 increase in 2010. This
years Cowtown Classic Limousin sale was very successful
and hopefully the trend will continue with the Texas
Best sale in it’s new venue, the Wichita Livestock sale
facility in Wichita Falls, TX. Discussions from the
floor included Ashley Harris expressing her concerns
over the decline in numbers of juniors exhibiting cattle
at Ft Worth this year and presented suggestions to the
board to increase participation as well as ways of
promoting the breed .and association. Wayne Baber and
Marcy Perrin addressed the group regarding the process
by which directors are nominated for and elected to the
board, and offered suggestions to improve on the
process.
Three new directors were elected to replace outgoing
directors Marcy Perrin, Ed Kirby, and Brad Davis. Larry
Garrison of Waskom and Dr. Scott Stowers of Bridgeport
were elected to represent region one, while Tim Stein of
Springtown was elected to serve region four. Larry and
Teresa Garrison have two children Renae and Ryan, both
were very active in showing Limousin heifers for many
years. Larry became involved with the Limousin breed
when he purchased two bulls for his commercial herd at
the Kenneth McGee dispersal, they have been members
since 1996. The farm is located in Waskom, TX near the
Louisiana border. They currently run 55 registered cows
and 20 commercial cows. A.I. is a very important part of
their program and are utilizing CFLX Wild Card a bull
they acquired semen interest on in Denver as well as
other top Limousin sires. Larry is employed by General
Motors, where he has served as a union representative.
Larry also served on the local school board
Dr. Scott Stowers is a board certified general surgeon,
his wife Donna is a pharmacist, they have three
children, Adam and wife Melinda live in Las Vegas with
their two children, Jesse and wife Melissa live in
Houston. Scott and Donna’s youngest daughter Lauren has
been very active in showing Limousin heifers on the
state and national level. The Stowers moved to
Bridgeport, TX about 17 years ago, bought some land and
began raising Limousin cattle as a hobby. Scott’s
passion for the breed has grown as has Stowers Limousin.
Their extensive embryo transplant program consists of 6
donors, the cow herd numbers near 100 head, many are
utilized as recips. Ranch manager Jason Gaston has
helped with the progress Stowers Limousin has made in
recent years.
Tim Stein and wife Marsha live in Springtown, TX, they
have three children Clint, Wesley, and Jennifer, and
eight grandchildren. Tim is an independent paint
contractor and began raising Limousin Cattle in 2000.
From the very beginning Tim used embryo transfer as the
basis of his operation. He currently has five donor cows
and maintains a recipient herd of about 25 head. Tim was
impressed with the Limousin breed by what the bulls
could bring to a commercial herd in the way of muscle
and performance.
All three have expressed a desire to improve
marketability of Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle for all
TLA members.
